Die Notwendigkeit einer solchen Kampagne wurde aus der NRW-Studie ‚Einstellungen der Bevölkerung zur Industrie in NRW‘ abgeleitet, der zufolge „75 Prozent der Bürger der Industriebranche impartial gegenüber [stehen], 15 Prozent […] ‚Totalverweigerer‘ [sind], [und] nur zehn Prozent […] die Industrie positiv [bewerten]“ (Deiters nach Wittenberg 2011). Eine Folgewirkung dieser Positionierung zur Industrie wird von Deiters (Vizepräsident der IHK Nord Westfalen) in Problemen bei der Anwerbung von Nachwuchs für die Industrie gesehen: „Die Industrie wird zu Unrecht oft in eine Schmuddelecke gedrängt. Das hat natürlich auch Auswirkungen auf den dringend benötigten Nachwuchs. Wer möchte sich schon auf einem Sektor engagieren, der in der Gesellschaft nur wenig anerkannt ist?“ (Deiters nach IHK Nord Westfalen 19.05.2011). Die nach den Ergebnissen der zitierten NRW-Studie eher unfavourable Bewertung des sozialen Konstrukts der Industrie (siehe oben: laut Umfrageergebnissen nur 10 Prozent optimistic Bewertung) hat demnach direkte Auswirkungen in der Praxis, obgleich das (Un-)Wissen, welches sich in der Bewertung des Konstrukts widerspiegelt, nach Auffassung der Vertreter der Industrie nicht mehr den heutigen Gegebenheiten entspricht.
Angeregt durch die Feststellungen der IHK Westfalen Nord zu den Befragungsergebnissen der NRW-Studie soll in dieser Arbeit untersucht werden, welche Bedeutung Industrie zugeschrieben wird bzw. welches Wissen um Industrie erzeugt wurde oder noch wird.

Interessant erscheinen hierbei vor allem die Fragen: Welches Wissen über die Industrie wird vermittelt? Wie oft wird die Industrie positiv, wie oft negativ belegt?
